As we enter 2021, I am looking forward to getting to know my new mentees better and really understand how I can best help them to achieve their goals and career ambitions.
Everybody is different and one size doesn't fit all. There isn't a playbook that you can handover for others to follow. It is critical to listen to their aspirations and adapt accordingly. Advice and guidance needs to be tailored not just to the individual, but also to the circumstances that we currently find ourselves in. We're all still learning to live with the new normal.
It may need to be over a virtual coffee nowadays, but there are still some important decisions that need to be made and it can be helpful to have somebody that you can confide in who isn't a colleague or your boss, but who can relate to your situation. Somebody who can give you the honest feedback that you're in need of. This is where an experienced mentor can really help. They may not have all of the answers at their fingertips, but they will know how to find them. They can point you in the right direction and help keep you on track with just the right amount of encouragement.
If you've got your own challenges ahead and you'd like to know if having a mentor might help, then please get in touch. I will be more than happy to give you an honest opinion - that's one of the benefits of being independent of the normal HR bureaucracy! ;)
